CANYON, Texas- The West Texas A&M Buffaloes couldn’t get over a slow start on Saturday night as the Simon Fraser Red Leafs clinched their first win in almost a calendar year with a 46-14 decision from the Lone Star Conference at SFA Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia in the Season Finals.

The Red Leafs marched down the field on their first drive of the game, finishing an 11-play drive that stretched 60 yards when Justin Seiber completed a 5-yard touchdown pass for Aiden Domino for a 7-0 lead . The Buffs responded to their first drive of the game as a 47 yard hunter merchant The kickoff return began with a nine-game drive 3:09 off the clock, WT converted in fourth-place SFU redzone as Shakell Brown finished the drive with a one-yard rush down the middle to tie it at 7-7.

Simon Fraser would regain the lead on her next drive when a long pass completion on the touchline set off a 34-yard field goal from Giovanni Linuzzi to make it 10-7. SFU would force a punt on WT’s next possession as the Red Leafs marched 69 yards in eight games, capped by a six-yard touchdown pass from Seiber to Ethan Beselt to extend the lead to 17-7.

SFU would use a big fourth stop near midfield on WT’s next drive to set up a 34-yard touchdown pass from Seiber to Beselt for the 23-7 lead. The Red Leafs made it big again on defense when they sacked Nick Gerber in the end zone for a 6:41 safety left in the half to extend their lead to 25-7. SFU capitalized on short field position after the safety kick when a fourth down conversion deep inside Buffalo territory led to a two-yard touchdown pass from Seiber to Sam Davenport for a 32-7.

The Red Leafs would extend their lead early in the third quarter when Somto Anyadike found the end zone after a year to end a seven-game drive that went 46 yards and extended the lead to 39-7. The SFU defense came out big again later in the quarter with an interception that set up Robert Meadors for an eight-yard touchdown reception to make it 46-7.

That’s how the Buffs took the lead in the fourth quarter Jarrod Compton found the end zone from 14 yards to finish a 91-yard drive and cut the SFU lead to 46-14 with 8:30 left.

Nick Gerber finished the game with 13 of 23 passes for 98 yards while also rushing for -6 yards five times. The Levelland senior moved up to fifth on WT’s all-time passing list when he passed Tod Mayfield (7,424 – 1984-86) with 7,504 yards in Maroon & White. Jarrod Compton finished the game with 45 yards on six carries with a touchdown during Noah Bogardus caught five passes for 37 yards.

Defensive, Preston Steszewski led the way for the Buffs with a total of seven tackles (five solo), followed by Christopher Thomas With a total of six tackles, the senior finishes his career fourth on the all-time WT tackle list with 329.
