SPRING, Texas — After the Klein Cain Hurricanes watched their halftime lead evaporate after a scoreless third quarter, the Klein Cain Hurricanes were in a back-and-forth battle for two counties in the Class 6A Division I high school football playoffs in Texas 17-9 behind Cypress Ranch.
But, fueled by their relentless charge and dominant defensive pass rush, the Hurricanes charged back in the fourth quarter.
Klein Cain used a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter within the final 6 minutes of play to shock the Cy Ranch Mustangs with a 31-24 comeback win Friday night at Klein Memorial Stadium.
The Hurricanes improved to a 10-1 aggregate with their come-from-behind win as Klein Cain takes on The Woodlands (9-2) in next week’s area round of the 6A DI Texas High School Football Playoffs.
More from SBLive Texas:
Cain began to turn the tide in his direction at the 8-minute mark of the fourth quarter when the defense came up with a big fourth stop to surrender the ball to the Hurricanes’ offense at their own 42-yard line.
Junior running back Yemi Adeleke ended a methodical drive for Klein Cain with an 8-yard touchdown run and set up Jaelen Smith to run in a successful, game-changing two-point conversion effort to help the ‘Canes level the score to improve 17-17 with less than 6 minutes remaining.
The Hurricanes’ defense prevailed again on the ensuing Cy Ranch drive when Camron Sum recovered a fumble at Cain’s 21-yard line.
Klein Cain capitalized moments later, taking a 24-17 lead with about 4 minutes left during the fourth when senior quarterback Jaelen Smith broke free for a crucial 69-yard touchdown run.
Incredibly, the Hurricanes rallied again on the ensuing kickoff to put the team’s offense on the edge of field goal range.
On the next game, Adeleke sped into the end zone on a 30-yard touchdown run to give Cain a 31-17 advantage over Cy Ranch with a 22-point swing during a dominant two-minute stretch of the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs responded by driving the length of the field and scoring on a touchdown pass to cut the Hurricanes’ lead to 31-24 with about 2 minutes remaining.
However, Klein Cain made sure the Mustangs never got the ball back by running time to cement their two-county comeback win.
The Hurricanes finished with 9.5 sacks defensively and more than 400 yards down offensively.
Smith finished the night with 46 yards and a through-air interception on 7-of-17 passing, but led Cain’s rushing attack, running 18 times for 229 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Adeleke mustered 184 yards and three touchdown runs with 25 carries for the Hurricanes.
Junior Tyler Edwards led defensively for Klein Cain with 17 tackles (13 solo), 7.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks on the night.
The loss ends Cy Ranch’s season with a 7-4 aggregate score after he finished third in the District 16-6A rankings.
The Hurricanes improve to 10-1 overall this year with the win, extending their now five-game winning streak.
Klein Cain (10-1) will look to make his return against The Woodlands (9-2) in the area round of the 6A DI Texas High School Football Playoffs next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
