State of Wichita welcomes North Texas to Saturday’s showdown

Wichita State blitzed Oral Roberts in Tulsa Wednesday night, 89-67. The Shockers dominated inside, scoring 66 of their 89 points in the paint and overtaking the Golden Eagles 49-27. Wichita State also scored 29 points from 19 turnovers by Oral Roberts. DJ McCarty 17 of her career-best 23 points before halftime on an efficient 11-of-17 shooting. Trajata Colbert finished the season with a season-high 19 points, marking their third straight game in double digits to start the season. Curtessia Dean added 16 points and seven rebounds and Jane Asinde recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Asinde missed the first two games through injury.

North Texas is 1-1 after the first two games of the season. The Mean Green defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana 71-58 in their opening game before losing 80-49 to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday. North Texas has struggled with turnovers as they averaged 21.5 in their first two games compared to just 9.0 assists. Jaaucklyn Moore averages a team-best 15.0 points but has just two assists in 12 turnovers. Tommisha Lampkin nearly hits a double-double with 12.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 64.7 percent from the field. Quincy Noble rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.0 per game.

Wichita State and North Texas have only met once prior to Saturday’s matchup at Charles Koch Arena. That lonely gathering took place just a year ago on December 17, 2021 in North Texas. Wichita State and North Texas will soon be conference opponents when Mean Green joins the American Athletic Conference in summer 2023.

Wichita State overcame a five-point deficit with less than 2:00 minutes to go to a 67-64 win in North Texas just last year. Wichita State finished the game on a 10-2 run, overcoming poor shooting from three-point range and 19 turnovers. North Texas attempted 16 more field goals but shot just 34.2 percent, including 4 of 26 from beyond the arc. Asia Strong led four Shockers in double figures with her monster double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Trajata Colbert added 14 points while Mariah McCully and DJ McCarty both gave up 12 points a piece.

Wichita State Senior Trajata Colbert was the most consistent shocker in the first three games of the season. Colbert has scored 10 or more points in all three games and leads the team with 16.3 points per game, which would easily be a career high. The Rochelle, Georgia native has never reached double digits in four straight games, which she was able to do against North Texas on Saturday. She has scored 10+ points in three consecutive games on four separate occasions.

Senior Jane Asinde made her 2022-23 season debut on Wednesday November 16 at Oral Roberts. All she did was her 10th career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. She is the active double-double leader for the state of Wichita, followed by Trajata Colbert with seven.

Despite losing in Omaha on November 12, two Wichita State players set new career records. Shamarya Duncan scored 13 of her career-best 17 points after halftime behind a perfect evening from three-point range. Duncan was 3-for-3 and was the only shocker to tie a triple in the contest. DJ McCarty notched a career-high 11 rebounds and also handed out a career-high six assists.

Wichita State Senior Trajata Colbert enters the season on the Wichita State career charts for field goal percentage. Her career field goal percentage of 51.4 is 10th, trailing Theresa Dreiling’s 51.8 percent in ninth place. Colbert also needs 19 blocked shots this season to crack Wichita State’s top 10 list. She competes with 72 career blocks and 10th place is currently 91st.

Senior Trajata Colbert has improved dramatically at the free-throw line over the past two years. The Georgia native started her career 42.1 percent as a freshman, 61.1 percent as a sophomore and 50.9 percent as a COVID sophomore. She posted a career-high 76.0 percent in 2021-22 and after three games in 2022-23 she is 13-15 (86.7 percent).

head coach Keitha Adams reinforced their coaching staff during the off-season with the hiring of Jim Littlell as an assistant coach. Littell spent the last 11 seasons as head coach at Oklahoma State and the six years before that as assistant head coach for the Cowgirls. He averaged a 204-140 record in his 11 seasons as the Cowgirls head coach. Littell was a two-time Big 12 Coach of the Year (2016, 2021) while leading Oklahoma State to six NCAA tournament appearances, one WNIT title and seven Cowgirls who achieved All-America status under his leadership. However, Adams and Littell are no strangers. Adams and Littell first met at Oxford High School. Adams was on the Oxford basketball team, where she played for Littell, and the two have maintained a close friendship over the years. Littell was the head coach at Oxford High School from 1978 to 1983 before building a strength center at Seward County Community College from 1991 to 2004.

For the sixth consecutive season, the Shocker basketball team will feature multiple players from international countries. The Shockers 2022-23 will feature eight student-athletes from international countries, the most in school history. Jane Asinde (Kampala, Uganda) Carla Budane (Maputo, Mozambique), Nhug Bosch Duran (Barcelona, ​​Spain) and Tatiana Platonova (Moscow, Russia) return to the program after one season. They are joined by newcomers: Daniela Abies (Malaga, Spain), Ambah Kowcun (Adelaide, Australia) Ornella Niankan (Montreal, Canada) and Raissa Nsabua (Ottawa, Canada). In the 12 seasons before that Keitha Adams Taking over the program, the state of Wichita had an international player (Marija Pacar). Under Adams, 20 international players representing 13 different countries have played for the Shockers in just six seasons.
