JONES LONGHORN DEBUT: Taylor Jones made an instant impression for the Longhorns when she posted a team-high 21 points in the season opener against Louisiana on November 11. Jones added six rebounds and five blocked shots. Jones followed with 10 points and eight rebounds against UConn.

KEEP DEFENSIVE: Texas defense limited Louisiana to 25 percent shots from the field and 45 points for the game. In the last five seasons, the Longhorns have held an opponent to 45 points or fewer nine times, six times under the head coach Vic Shepherd.

SUPPORTING CAST: The Longhorns have excellent production from their reserves, averaging 30 points per game from the bench.

FRESHMAN IMPACT: Freshman Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda made a productive impact on the Longhorns in their first two collegiate games. Mwenentanda has scored in double digits in both games, with a season-high 13 points at UConn on Monday.

NEWCOMERS: The Longhorns’ 2022-23 roster includes seven newcomers, including four transfers and three freshmen. Texas signed 54 points per game and 27 rebounds per game from the transfer portal. Shaylee Gonzales (BYU) and Sonya Morris (DePaul) both scored over 1,000 at their previous schools. Gonzales was an AP All-America Honorable Mention and ranked 10th in program history with 1,555 points. Morris ranked 9th in DePaul history in career scoring with 1,668 career points and 8th in career 3-point field goals with 193. The Longhorns gained in size 6-4 Taylor Jones (Oregon State) and 6-4 Khadija Faye (TexasTech).

PRESEASON AWARDS: The Longhorns were one of three programs in NCAA DI women’s basketball to be represented on all five 20-player Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fall/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association watchlists. The Longhorns honored were: (Rori Harmony-Nancy Lieberman Prize, Sonya Morris-Ann Meyers Drysdale Prize, Shay Holle-Cheryl Miller Prize, Aaliyah Moore-Katrina McClain Award and Taylor Jones-Lisa Leslie Prize).

POST-SEASON SUCCESS: With Head Coach Vic Shepherd At the top, the Longhorns have advanced to the Elite Eight in consecutive seasons. Texas also won the 2022 Big 12 tournament championship with a win over Baylor. Coach Schaefer has led teams into the Elite Eight for five straight seasons. Texas ranks #4 among all NCAA DI women’s basketball programs in all-time NCAA tournament appearances with 34.
