Iowa’s 2022-2023 schedule gets that much tougher after Friday’s game. Still, the Hawkeyes are focused on the task at hand and taking care of business against North Carolina AT&T at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Before Friday night’s final warm-up, let’s dive into some of the notes leading up to it.
Point guard Tony Perkins had the game’s best 16 points while Kris Murray had 14, Payton Sandfort 13, Patrick McCaffery 12 and Filip Rebraca 11 chips.
The Hawkeyes had a 15-3 record in home games in 2021-22. Iowa has won more than 14 home competitions in each of the past four years.
Fran McCaffery has led Iowa to 20 or more wins in eight of the last ten seasons. He has led Iowa to the upper league of the Big Ten in nine of the last 10 years. Iowa, Michigan State, and Wisconsin have each had nine top finishes in the Big Ten’s first division since 2013.
Iowa is bringing back 52.4 percent of its goals from last season, third-most in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.74); Fourth in lowest turnovers per game (9.2); and seventh in sales margin (4.4).
North Carolina A&T exits the Big South Conference and is playing its first season in the Colonial Athletic Association. Last year, the Aggies posted an overall record of 12-20, including a 6-10 league mark. North Carolina A&T had a winning home record of 7-4.
Keegan Murray became Iowa’s single-season scoring leader (822 points). After 117 years without a player to score 700 points in a single season, the Hawkeyes have had a player of 700+ points in each of the last three seasons: Luka Garza scored 740 in 2020 and 747 in 2021.
Iowa has qualified for six NCAA tournaments in the last eight completed seasons (2014-16, 2019, 2021, 2022) and nine postseason tournaments (6 NCAA; 3 NIT) in the last 10 completed seasons. The 2020 postseason has been canceled due to COVID-19
Phillip Shumpert has taken on the role of interim head coach after serving as assistant coach to Will Jones for almost three years. Shumpert has recruiting and mentoring experience at Lawson Community College, West Alabama and Lawson.
North Carolina A&T ranked third in multiple categories last year in the Big South, including offensive rebounds and steals per game, total steals and forced turnovers.
The Aggies scored a 100-61 win over Edward Waters on Monday. Starters Kam Woods (22) and Demetric Horton (19) combined for 41 points. North Carolina A&T shot the win on 17 of 34 (.500) from 3-point territory.
