Livent completes expansion of largest lithium hydroxide manufacturing facility in the United States in North Carolina.
Livent Corporation (NYSE: LTHM) opened the first of several major expansions of the company’s operations around the world, significantly increasing its lithium hydroxide manufacturing capacity in Bessemer City, North Carolina, a birthplace of lithium-ion battery technology and an increasingly important supply hub for the growing electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Livent’s leading presence in North America positions the Company to take advantage of long-term growth opportunities and downstream incentives from the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which encourages the use of lithium produced or processed in North America.
The Bessemer City expansion will increase the site’s lithium hydroxide production capacity by 50% and help meet growing demand for US-made electric vehicle battery materials.
Paul GravesLivent’s President and Chief Executive Officer said:
Livent is America’s original lithium company, with roots dating back to the 1940’s.
“By cutting the ribbon for our Bessemer City expansion, we are opening the next phase of our work to advance the transition to electric vehicles, clean energy and a more sustainable future.”
“The expansion is the first new lithium hydroxide manufacturing facility in North America in more than a decade. With our amazing team here in North Carolina and the support of the government at all levels, we are on track to significantly increase Livent’s production of the high quality lithium chemicals our customers need.”
Federal, state and local officials welcomed the completion of Livent’s new lithium hydroxide facility in Bessemer City. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper congratulated Livent in a letter, as did Senator Thom Tillis.
Senator Tillis commented:
Manufacturing plays a vital role in our economy and Livent is a great example of an organization that supports vital jobs in our state.
“I applaud your role in making American products and appreciate your continued investment in North Carolina.”
Governor Cooper written down:
We are excited about the future of electric vehicle manufacturing here and look forward to continuing the great working relationship we have with Livent Corporation.
“This is an exciting time for our state.”
Among the distinguished guests attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony today were North Carolina State Representative Kelly Hastings; US Department of Commerce Critical Minerals Sector Manager Salim Bhabhrawala; Members of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, including Vice Chairman Bob Hovis; and Mayor of the City of Bessemer, Becky Smith. All highlighted Livent’s deep roots and community involvement in North Carolina, and the exciting role that Bessemer City and Livent can continue to play in shaping the future of the lithium industry.
