The Colorado Eagles say goodbye to their longtime fan favorite

Some things in northern Colorado have always been taken for granted. Incredible sunsets no matter the season. Traffic on I-25 is almost always a disaster during rush hours. And for the past twenty years, the booming voice of Reed Saunders’ “Eaaaaagles Goal” has echoed throughout the Budweiser Events Center during each Colorado Eagles hockey season.

This, the Eagles’ twentieth season, will be Saunders’ last with the team. He has served as their primary spokesman for the Eagles’ twenty-year history, with only a few games along the way. They announced that he would retire at the end of the 2022-2023 season to spend fewer nights between the penalty boxes on the ice and more nights at home during the long hockey season with his wife and children.

“Reed is simply the best of the best at his job,” said Eagles President Ryan Bach. “We are obviously saddened that he is stepping down, but we are thrilled to know that he can now spend quality time with his wife and children, who he loves so dearly. We can’t thank Reed enough for what he meant to our story, our atmosphere and our fans. We wish him every success and happiness and we all look forward to enjoying his passion and professionalism for the rest of this season.”

Aside from being the PA announcer for the Eagles for the past 20 years, he’s obviously done a few other things behind a mic during that time. You may have heard him call out lineups for a different sport at a different stadium. Reed has also been the PA announcer for the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field since 2007. He’s also pitched in at Ball Arena for Avalanche games and even at Empower Field at Mile High for Broncos games.

At Coors Field, he replaced Denver Sports Announcement legend Alan Roach, who moved to his hometown of Minneapolis, where he handles PA duties for the Vikings and league events for the NFL. It’s hard to believe until you see it on paper, but Roach was the PA spokesman for the Rockies from 1993-2006. Saunders took over in 2007, where he remains to this day. If you do the math there, Roach was the announcer for 13 years. Reed has now reached 15, making him the longest-serving PA announcer in Rockies history.

Personally, I can say that I worked with Reed myself at Eagles games from the beginning through the 2011-2012 season, and I can certainly add on behalf of Big Rob, who has worked with him ever since, that Reed is just as nice – if not prettier – a human than he is an exceptional loudspeaker speaker. His energy and professionalism are second to none and being able to banter back and forth with him over mics each night at the Budweiser Events Center was a treat. He will be sorely missed by colleagues and Eagles fans alike!

10 Favorite Players of All Time in the Colorado Rockies

Some really great players have worn the Rockies uniform, but you’ll only find one in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame. We could have a discussion about the greatest Colorado Rockies players of all time, or we could have a more subjective conversation about favorite players. While there’s some overlap, there’s a difference and there’s plenty of room to be different.
