Johansson dazzles in a 3-1 win over San Jose

November 13, 2022

SAN JOSE, CA — Colorado goaltender Jonas Johansson made 28 saves on 29 shots to make his fourth straight start at the net as the Eagles beat the San Jose Barracuda 3-1 on Sunday. Forwards Ben Tardif, Charles Hudon and Anton Blidh both scored in victory as Colorado picked up three points from a possible four in the team’s two-game set in San Jose.

Colorado would come onto the board first when Tardif sped into the zone, set up a cross-slot pass in the left circle and snapped it home. The goal was Tardif’s first in the American Hockey League and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 5:30 remaining in the first period. Colorado beat the Barracuda 17-3 in the first 20 minutes and went into the first break 1-0.

In the second period, the Eagles would continue to generate opportunities, including 1:26 of a 5-on-3 power play. Barracuda goaltender Eetu Makiniemi would remain strong, however, and the two teams would go into the second break with Colorado still in possession of a 1-0 lead.

A power play would help extend the Eagles’ lead as Hudon was thrown onto the ice in the low slot but managed to turn the puck on the way down and blast it into back net. The goal was Hudon’s team-leading seventh of the season, leading Colorado 2-0 at the final frame’s 8:16 mark.

San Jose would draw Makiniemi with five minutes to go to bring out the extra attacker, but it would be Eagles forward Anton Blidh who would capitalize with an empty net at the 17:28 mark of the third.

A holding penalty on Spencer Smallman would give the Barracuda a power play in the last minute of regulation, and San Jose forward Tristen Robins would benefit as he lit the lamp with a wrister from the top of the right circle with just 35 seconds left to play in competition.

Colorado notched a season-high 37 shots at the net in the competition and held the Barracuda on just 29 shots. The Eagles finished the game 1-4 on the power play while San Jose also converted one of their four man-advantage chances.
