BAKERSFIELD, CA – Four different Colorado players netted while goaltender Justus Annunen made 34 saves on 37 shots as the Eagles beat the Bakersfield Condors 4-3 on Tuesday. The win ends a three-game road trip for Colorado that saw the Eagles collect five points from a possible six and give the team 17 points for the year, good for first place in the Pacific Division.
Colorado scored the first goal of the game when defenseman Brad Hunt fired a shot from the top of the right circle that was deflected by forward Mikhail Maltsev’s stick into the back net. The goal was Maltsev’s second of the season and gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 8-12 mark of the first period. After Colorado defeated the Condors 14-8 in the first 20 minutes, they still had a 1-0 lead at the first break.
Eagles forward Alex Beaucage extended the lead by just 2:48. In the second half, he won a puck that was in the bottom slot after a faceoff and fed it past Bakersfield goalie Calvin Pickard to put Colorado 2-0 up.
The Eagles would strike again less than two minutes later when forward Justin Scott spun at the top of the right circle and blasted a wrister into the back net to extend Colorado’s lead to 3-0 at the 4:18 mark. Shortly after the goal, Pickard would leave the competition with an injury and be replaced by Olivier Rodrigue for the duration at the net.
A power play for the Condors would put them on the board as defenseman Philip Broberg separated two Eagles defensemen at the blue line before cutting into the net and lifting the puck past Annunen to take the deficit 5-14 to 3-1 to be shortened left in the middle frame.
The momentum in momentum wouldn’t last long as Eagles forward Oskar Olausson flew down the left boards before snapping a wrister from the circle that would light the lamp and give Colorado a 4-1 lead at the 15:46 mark second stanza.
Bakersfield charged back in the third period, passing the Eagles 14-8 in the final frame and producing two goals. The first tally came when Broberg snapped a loose puck on top of the crease and strapped it home to cut Colorado’s lead to 4-2, just 6:49 into the period.
A power play late in the third would see the Condors draw Rodrigue for the extra attacker and the switch would pay off as striker Greg McKegg scored a shot from between the circles that lit the lamp and leveled the deficit at 6 reduced to 4:3:20 left to play in the competition.
Bakersfield would draw Rodrigue again in the final two minutes of the game, but the Eagles would parry the onslaught to hold the 4-3 win.
Colorado notched a season-high 39 shots in the competition while the Condors had 37 shots of their own. The Eagles ended the night 3-0 on the power play and 2-0 on penalties.
