Work begins on agreement to declare Punjab, California sister state: CM

LAHORE – Progress has been made towards an agreement to declare Punjab and California “sister states” and a special letter has been sent to Punjab Premier Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on behalf of California Legislative Assembly Leader Chris R. Holden. mailed that regard.

An invitation was extended to the CM to sign its signatures on the Punjab-California Sister State Relationship Agreement, according to the handout released here on Sunday.

The CM chaired a meeting to review matters related to the agreement, which was also attended by former Federal Minister Moonis Elahi.

Former Federal Secretary and P&D Chairman Salman Ghani provided an update on the details and elements of the Punjab-California Sister State Relationship Agreement.

The CM ordered the sister state relationship agreement between Punjab and California to be finalized immediately. He said the deal would improve trade, economic and business ties between Pakistan and California and increase bilateral investment. He emphasized that relations in the areas of education, health, information technology, environment and culture would be promoted. He stressed that this agreement will further strengthen mutual ties between Punjab and the State of California.

The prime minister said that a special department would be set up in the planning and development committee to finalize the agreement, which would finalize matters related to the agreement.

CM said all matters related to the agreement to declare the Punjab and California sister state would be finalized soon. He said that although the Punjab government delegation received an invitation to visit California to attend the signing ceremony of the agreement, we would be happy if the California delegation made this agreement by coming to Lahore.

The CM informed that the California Legislative Assembly passed the Memorandum of Understanding declaring the sister state relationship between Punjab and California. He added that the letter sent by Mr. Chris R. Holden made a reference to the resolution passed by the California Legislative Assembly regarding the agreement declaring the relationship between the Punjab and the sister California state, adding, that the copy of the letter had been sent to the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Donald Blome, Director of the USAID Mission, and the officials concerned.

CM stated that Chris R. Holden had informed him that the latter was very pleased to extend him a formal invitation to the Arrangement for California-Punjab Relations via the Sister States. He hoped that an agreement on sister state relations between Punjab and California would soon be signed under the leadership of CM Pervaiz Elahi.

Provincial Counselor Amir Saeed Rawn, Chief Secretary Punjab Abdullah Sumbal, Former Federal Secretary and Chairman of P&D Salman Ghani, Former Chief Secretary of CM GM Sikander, Secretary of Local Government, DG Punjab Emergency Services Dr. Rizwan Naseer and the officers concerned attended the meeting.
