Industries with the highest number of work-related accidents in California

When the Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened in 1971, the state of occupational safety was extremely grim. In the 1960s, a staggering 14,000 workers died on the job every year. With no safety regulations or enforcement, workers were largely unprotected from unsafe conditions, resulting in high rates of injury and death.

The formation of OSHA drastically changed the occupational safety landscape. In the first three decades after the administration opened, the accident rate at work fell by 40%. In 2020, 4,764 workplace-related deaths occurred in the United States, up from 5,333 in 2019, despite a quadrupling of work-related illnesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While workplaces have generally become safer over the past five decades, with far fewer injuries and fatalities reported, some industries are more hazardous than others. In 2020, the industries with the highest workplace fatalities were agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, construction, and transportation and warehousing. However, due to the pandemic, nurses and other healthcare workers have been hit with illnesses and injuries far more frequently than usual, resulting in days off from work.

Stacker has compiled a 2021 list of industries with the highest rate of workplace injuries in California using data from OSHA. Industries are ranked by injury rate. Ties are broken by the sheer number of injuries. Industries with hours worked less than 1 work year or 2,000 hours and industries with an injury rate of 0 were excluded.
