California’s Oldest Family-Owned Cheese Company – San Francisco Bay Times

Gay owned and operated Foggy Bottoms Boys Farm is one of several small farms that supply organic milk to Rumiano Cheese Company, California’s oldest family-owned cheese company. Before discovering the Foggy Bottoms Boys, members of our San Francisco Bay Times The team knew about rumiano — saw and bought it from time to time at popular local stores like Rainbow Grocery, Safeway, Nob Hill Foods, and others — but didn’t really think about how it’s made.

For example, it was interesting to learn that all of the dairies supplying milk to Rumiano are within a 100-mile radius, reducing carbon emissions from milk trucks and limiting the use of fossil fuels. Rumiano’s entire organic cheese line, organic butter and organic whey protein were the first in the world to receive Non-GMO Project Verification!

Rumiano also goes the extra mile to produce grass-fed milk. California’s mild northwest coast has prime grazing weather and grazing season. Year-round access to pasture and naturally growing coastal grasses are essential to the company’s definition of grass-fed feeding. Open pasture and natural grazing allow cows to roam freely and produce high-quality milk. Haylage and silage are used as forage when the weather is too wet and cold for grazing, which is rare. The method of grass-feeding benefits animals and consumers by contributing to the production of healthy and species-appropriate dairy products.

Grass-fed and pastured cows that are allowed to roam freely and eat a natural, varied diet are far healthier, but farmers are finding that the cows also appear to be far happier. Small farmers often name their cows, recognizing that they are social creatures that are happiest when they have space in their herd to roam and socialize with others, which ends up producing a much healthier end product.

Rumiano and others in this section do not advertise that Bay Times– we wish they would! – but we are proud to support businesses and small farms and businesses like this one that produce very high quality products and are committed to the health of both the planet and future generations.
